Nearly every time I tell someone I'm moving to upstate New York, I get the a confused and questioning look followed by "You know they have weather there, right?"


Yes. I know they have weather. I've even been back there for some of it (if you don't believe me, look at my ice sculpture photos). Honestly, I could use being a little miserable where weather is concerned. 72 and sunny can get quite boring after 20 years. So, after a little research, this is what I could dig-up about how big the change will be on the weather "front."


Ithaca gets hot and humid in the summer and downright frigid in the winter.  There will be snow, and lots of it. It rains all year round, rather than three times during and El Niño year. None of this is exactly surprising.


After a week of such perfect weather in SB, I can definitely say that knowing I'm moving has made me pause a little bit more, breath in the breeze, and soak up the sunny day.

Distilling Memories

My strategy regarding moving thus far in life has been one of boxed pack-rat-ism. I took to heart that, one day, I may yearn for nostalgically sorting through old nicknack's and school assignments. Now I'm realizing that collecting every Scantron from college will probably not help me gleam the subtleties of my earlier years.


Each time my family moved, I would go through all these boxes and distill out the important bits. So at this point elementary school and junior high are contained in two small boxes, whereas high school is still in at least four, and college is half-a dozen boxes, a large Tupperware container, and several loose piles in the closet.


A consequence of this is that I can barely get to my bed from my door right now, especially when the cats, being cats, lie down in the middle of the only path.

It's Official!

After a remarkable amount of technical difficulties, I printed, signed, scanned, emailed, and submitted (via Jenni) the lease for our apartment in upstate New York. It's a newly renovated, 2 bedroom apartment on the second floor of a house build in the 1880's.

It's an interesting feeling, moving to a house I've never seen. I kinda have a "what's the worst that can happen?" mentality. Over the years my family has moved into so many different houses, some nice, some sketchy, and we have always made-do. To borrow from Dr. Horrible's: "Home is where your heart is/ So your real home's in your chest!"

Concerning Hobbits

I have wanted to write a blog for a while now. The it-factor of Twitter combined with an attention span, blogging seemed right up my alley. But without a coherent theme or reason to write one, my blogging ambitions were delayed indefinitely.

Having now decided to move clear across the country, I have found both a topic and an audience. This blog is intended to be a medium through which I can share events, updates, and vague ramblings with the family and friends I am leaving behind on the west coast. If anyone else finds it interesting, that's fine too. Enjoy!
